Data Mining – Detecting Outliers in Regression models...

[Featured Image © By: Jorge Franganillo] Before digging into the topic, I would first like to make it clear about data mining and regression models in simple terms. Data mining is a process of retrieving structured forms of data from a data warehouse. Three major data analysis strategies such as classification, regression and clustering are used for data mining. Regression analysis on the other hand, is a statistical process for estimating the relationships among data variables. It includes many techniques for modeling and analyzing data variables. Now, as if you know what is data mining and what is regression analysis, let me elaborate it and further continue my topic on outliers and detecting outliers in regression models. Data mining is a process of detecting undetected relationships among data items by applying automated data analysis techniques. Consider you fell in love with a girl whom you don’t know at all. Now, you and your girl are two data items whose relationship is undetected. You will try to search for a link between you and your girl. So, You will first try to retrieve some data from her surroundings (from the place where she is located). By doing this search, you will identify some links between you and her. Friends, colleagues, family relations and many other types can fall into these links. This search process can be referred to as data mining. Her surrounding can be related to a data warehouse. Secondly, you will classify several factors identifying the links between you and her. The aim of this classification is to identify a better link.   This process of estimating the relationships can be refereed to as regression analysis. As a result of data mining, essential data that is required is extracted from data repositories. Data collation and data pre-processing are the two phases where unusual values, errors, duplicate records or data contamination may occur. Data resulting from the inconsistent datasets containing unusual data values are called outliers. In order to perform data mining tasks, several data analysis models are designed. Three data models classification, regression and clustering are prominently used for data mining. Regression models are used to map data values systematically. One constraint of regression models is that it maps data based on numeric variables (one or more variables dependent on the other variable). For example, by using regression models we can predict the weight by analyzing the height and age of a person. Methods used for detecting outliers in regression models. When Regression models are applied, the data values of all the dataset are obtained. A graphical analysis of all these data values can analyze the residual values (Outliers) in them. Thereafter, to confirm these predicted outliers, three statistical outlier detection methods such as Standard method, Cook’s distance method, Mahalanobis distance method can be used. Standard method detects outliers by finding the mean and standard deviation of all resulting data values and then by analyzing a threshold. The values that fall outside the range of threshold value are considered as outliers. Cook’s distance method or Cook’s D estimates the validity of outliers when performing least squares regression analysis. Cook’s distance measures the distance of resulted data values by calculating the mean of the data variables (values). The Residual values that are of far distance when compared to other data values are detected as outliers. Mahalanobis distance method detects outliers based on the data relationships that are occurred through data mapping. Here, the correlation between data variables will detect dissimilar patterns that further help in analyzing the outliers. Standard method and Cook’s distance method show almost same tendency in predicting outliers, whereas Mahalanobis results showcase a completely different results when compared to the other two.   This is usually due to the similar process of detecting outliers (by obtaining mean) in standard method and Cook’s method; which is not the case in Mahalanobis distance method. In other words, when the product fails to satisfy the end-user, it is regarded as the product failure; A product failure decides the cheap or low quality of a software product.  Let use consider some scenarios, views and examples to understand what software quality is. Quality is simple and with a lot of surprises Software quality conforms the selection and use of software requirements when building a product. Before developing a product, the project management team extracts qualified requirements. Processing unknown, not clear and too complex requirements may lead to product failure. Unknown requirements is when the project manager or other responsible lead doesn’t confirm the requirements before building a project. This may lead to client’s dissatisfaction; resulting in rework. Not clear requirements is when the project manager attempts to identify the requirements and fails to confirm them with the client.
